The Agencia Espacial Mexicana, (AEM) Mexico’s space agency, was created in 2010 to promote academic and industrial activity in Mexico related to space sciences and to contribute to the country’s scientific, technological, industrial and economic development. One of its priorities is to explore the use of satellite technology to provide early warning to the population in the event of natural disasters, to track the effects of global warming, and to predict the spread of diseases, among others. The presentation will make a balance of results brought about in the first four years of AEM´s operation and will address some of the challenges that the agency faces to accomplish its mission, including cultivating a world-class workforce, leveraging the potential of universities to spur innovation-based business in Mexico and promote the growth of space related industries of Mexico´s aerospace manufacturing sector. Emphasis will be done in fostering alliances to develop international collaboration in the scientific, educational, and commercial arenas in the space sector.


Mr. Duarte has participated in various national and international space and telecommunication projects and is a founding member of the Mexican Space Agency. He is the author or coauthor of over 50 publications in the areas of telecommunications, innovation, space technology, and education. From 2003 to 2005, he was commissioned by the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) to represent it in the State of California, USA, with the mission of establishing partnerships between U.S. and Mexican organizations to enhance the competitiveness of the California-Mexico border. He also has served as Adjunct Faculty at the Universidad Nacional Autonóma de México (UNAM). Mr. Duarte, holds a BSc in Engineering, from UNAM, and has a Master of Scientific Instrumentation awarded by the University of California, Santa Barbara, UCSB, and an Advanced Diploma in Management by the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, ITESM.
