Dr. Sorin Popescu

Dr. Sorin Popescu is a professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at Texas A&M University. His areas of research and teaching are remote sensing of the environment with a specialty in laser or lidar remote sensing of vegetation structure; Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS); sensors and algorithmic methodologies to derive vegetation biophysical parameters; and forest fuels and fire risk. He currently serves as a principal investigator on a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Definition Team for a future satellite mission- the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat 2)- with a launch date in 2018.

He holds a PH.D. in forestry from Virginia Tech and a degree in forestry from Transylvania University of Brasov, Romania.
